Hurricane Irene

Some of you may remember Jean and David’s skit… “We’re here for you in rain, sleet, or snow, and even a hurricane…”.  Although we did not expect that we would actually ever encounter that last scenario, KP was hit by the 50 mile per hour winds of Hurricane Irene- which was, in fact, down graded to a tropical storm by the time it hit Maine.

To prepare for the storm, we pulled the iceberg, blob, ski boats, and all of the docks out of the water.  All of the sailboats were taken down and all of the doors and windows were screwed shut.  The lawn chairs and all of the flower boxes were put into the lodge and it looked like a botanical garden inside!

No one was at camp, with the exception of several staff members, who witnessed the powerful winds and torrential rains of the storm from the safety of the Lodge.  The lake looked like an ocean with big swells and powerful surf, while the camp road looked like it had green carpeting from all of the small pine branches that had blown to the ground.  Ultimately, KP was very lucky to have dodged some of the more major damage that has occurred up and down the east coast.  We had 12 large pine trees fall in addition quite a lot of small debris from the trees which covered the ground.  We had large trees fall near Art 1, Pleasant, the Girls Biffy.  A large tree also fell on the Golf course, and yes, it was a hole-in-one.  It is truly fortunate that no buildings were damaged during the storm.  The power never went out, however, we were left without internet access for several days.

With only 6 hours to prepare for Family Camp, our staff worked together to return KP to it’s normal, beautiful state. When we were all done, It was amazing to see camp look like nothing happened- it was as if the hurricane had never hit!  We owe it all to our great staff who worked so well together as a team to get the job done!  Thanks again!
