Swimming Levels

Red Cross Swimming Levels 3 and 4

To participate in canoeing, kayaking, sailing, wakeboarding, waterskiing, and windsurfing, a camper must complete or test out of Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 3. Below are the level 3 requirements:

  • Jump into deep water
  • Headfirst entry from sitting or kneeling position
  • Submerge and retrieve an object
  • Bobs with head fully submerged, 5 times
  • Rotary breathing with body horizontal, 5 times
  • Front glide using two different kicks for 2 body lengths
  • Survival float in deep water for 30 seconds
  • Back glide using two different kicks for 2 body lengths
  • Back float in deep water for 30 seconds
  • Change from vertical to horizontal position on front in deep water
  • Change from vertical to horizontal position on back in deep water
  • Tread water for 30 seconds in deepwater
  • Front crawl for 15 yards
  • Butterfly kick and body motion for 15 feet
  • Back crawl for 15 yards

Campers are required to take swimming lessons until they complete or test out of Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 4. Below are the level 4 requirements:

  • Dive from compact or stride position in water at least 9 feet deep
  • Swim underwater for 3 body lengths 
  • Survival float in deep water for 1 minute
  • Back float in deep water for 1 minute
  • Open turn on front, push off in streamlined position
  • Open turn on back, push off in streamlined position
  • Tread water using modified scissors, breaststroke, or rotary kick and sculling arm motions for 1 minute
  • Front crawl for 25 yards
  • Breaststroke for 15 yards
  • Butterfly for 15 yards
  • Back crawl for 25 yards
  • Elementary backstroke for 15 yards
  • Swim on side with scissors kick for 15 yards
